Plan your Sri Lanka trip

Practical guidance for visas, weather, etiquette, food and safety — so you arrive prepared.

Visa guidance

Most visitors need prior authorisation. Requirements change by nationality — always verify on official government sources before you book flights.

OWT Sri Lanka does not issue visas. We can share general timing guidance once your nationality and travel dates are known.

Best time to visit

Sri Lanka’s climate varies by coast because of two monsoon systems:

  • South & west coast / Cultural Triangle: often best roughly December–March
  • East coast: often best roughly May–September
  • Hill country: cooler year-round; expect mist and occasional rain

Wildlife viewing also varies by park and season — tell us your priorities and we will suggest months that fit.

Weather by region

  • Colombo & west: warm and humid; heavy rain possible in the southwest monsoon
  • Cultural Triangle: hot by day; dry season preferred for outdoor sightseeing
  • Hill country (Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella): cooler evenings; pack a light layer
  • South coast: beach weather in the Dec–Mar window for many travellers
  • East coast: stronger beach season in the mid-year months

Currency

The local currency is the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). Cards are widely accepted in hotels and larger restaurants; carry some cash for markets, tips and rural stops. Exchange rates and card surcharges vary — your hotel or bank cards may offer clearer rates than airport kiosks.

Tipping

Tipping is appreciated but not always mandatory. Many hotels add a service charge. For private chauffeurs and guides, a tip at the end of the trip is customary if you were happy with the service. Amounts are personal — we can suggest typical ranges in your pre-departure notes.

Clothing

  • Light, breathable clothing for lowland heat
  • A light jacket or shawl for air-conditioning and hill evenings
  • Comfortable walking shoes; sandals for beach days
  • Modest clothing for temples (shoulders and knees covered)
  • Swimwear for beach and hotel pools only

Temple etiquette

  • Cover shoulders and knees; remove hats
  • Remove shoes before entering shrine areas
  • Do not pose with your back to Buddha statues for photos
  • Speak quietly and follow local guidance on photography
  • Your guide will brief you at each site

SIM cards

Local prepaid SIMs (Dialog, Mobitel, Airtel and others) are available at the airport and in towns with passport registration. eSIM options may also be available depending on your device. Coverage is generally good in cities and tourist areas; remote parks can be patchy.

Transport

OWT private tours use air-conditioned cars, vans or coaches with an experienced chauffeur-guide. Scenic trains (for example Kandy–Ella) can be added where seats are available. Domestic flights are optional for longer island hops. We do not recommend self-drive for most first-time visitors.

Safety

Sri Lanka is a welcoming destination for visitors who use normal travel sense: secure valuables, use hotel safes, and follow guide advice at wildlife parks and ocean beaches (currents can be strong). Check your government’s travel advice before departure.

Travel insurance

We strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance covering medical care, evacuation, trip interruption and adventure activities you plan to book (for example diving or trekking). OWT Sri Lanka does not sell insurance — arrange cover from a reputable provider in your home country before you travel.

Food and dietary support

Sri Lankan cuisine is rich in rice, curries, seafood and fresh fruit. Tell us allergies and preferences when you enquire — we note them for hotels and restaurants wherever practical. Street food is best approached with guidance if you have a sensitive stomach.

Halal food

Halal and Muslim-friendly dining is available in many areas, especially larger towns and hotels that cater to Gulf and South Asian guests. We plan meal stops accordingly when you request a halal-conscious itinerary. Availability is stronger in some regions than others — we confirm options in your quote.

Vegetarian and Jain food

Vegetarian meals are widely available. Jain travellers should share strict requirements in advance so hotels can avoid root vegetables and unsuitable preparations where possible. We cannot guarantee every property meets every rule, but we select partners carefully and confirm in writing.

Travelling with children

Family trips work well with shorter transfer days, pool hotels and a mix of wildlife, culture and beach time. Share ages so we can advise on safari vehicles, room configurations and suitable activities. See also our family holidays page.

Accessibility

Historic sites, trains and some hotels have limited step-free access. If anyone in your party uses a wheelchair or needs reduced walking, tell us early — we will recommend suitable hotels and adjust the sightseeing load honestly.

Emergency contacts

  • Sri Lanka emergency services: 119 (police) · 110 / 1990 (medical — confirm locally)
  • OWT Sri Lanka (business hours): +94 77 115 7116 · WhatsApp · info@owtsrilanka.com
